How Mastery Board works, in the order you meet it. Nothing here needs an account to read, so a link to an article can go straight into a staff email.
Getting started
- Signing in, and the code from your phoneMastery Board asks for your password and then a 6-digit code from an authenticator app. Here is how to set the app up the first time.
- If you forget your passwordAsk for a link by email, choose a new password, then enter your code as usual.
- Opening a class from ClassLink or SchoologyCopy a class's link and put it on a ClassLink tile or in a Schoology course, so the class is one tap away.
Marking a board
- Marking a whole class at onceThe Assessments tab puts every child down the side and every question or skill across the top, and saves each mark as you type it.
- Marking one child at a timePress a child's name on the grid to record only that child, with targets big enough to press without looking.
- Marking the letters and words a child missedWhere a skill carries the actual letters, words or sentences, press Start and tap only the ones the child missed.
- Absent children, and notesMarking a child absent leaves that unit out of every average, and a note keeps what you noticed with the unit it belongs to.
- What the colours meanMastered at 80% and above, Developing from 50 to 79, Needs Support below 50 — and a hatched square means nothing was recorded.
Children and classes
- Adding a classWhat Add a class asks for, which term the class belongs to, and who can see it once it is made.
- Adding children to a classAdd a child by hand on the Students tab: a first name is all that is required, and a Student ID keeps one child one child.
- Bringing in a class list from a spreadsheetUpload the list your district or last year's teacher sent, check what Mastery Board found in it, and add the whole class in one go.
- Moving a child to another classMove takes a child out of one class and into another in one step, and keeps what was recorded in both.
- Making small groupsMastery Board sorts the class into groups from the scores on one Mastery Board. The groups are then yours to change and to print.
Reports and printing
- What to reteachThe letters and words a class missed on one unit, hardest first, and the children who missed each one.
- The Reports tabChoose a skill or standard from the list, and see which children have mastered it, which are developing and which need support.
- PrintingThe class record, a child's summary, a report, small groups and sheets to mark on paper — all printed by your own browser.
- A child's progress pageOne child's year in one page: overall, skill by skill against the class, unit by unit, the words to practise and your notes.
Board Templates
- Templates and a class's Mastery BoardA template holds the units you teach. Put it on a class, and that class has a Mastery Board to record on.
- Building a templateName it, add a unit, choose how you'll mark it, and type in what you mark. The board it makes is drawn underneath as you go.
- Who can use a templateKeep it to yourself, build it with your team, or publish it to the school — and what each one means for classes already using it.
- Documents on a unitKeep the printed test, its scoring guide and whatever else goes with a unit on the unit itself, ready on every class using the template.
- Making a template from a spreadsheetUpload the Excel file your team already records in, check what Mastery Board found in it, and keep it as a Board Template.
Your account
Running a school
- Inviting a teacher or an administratorEveryone comes in by invitation. You enter their name, email and role; they choose their own password.
- Teams, and who is on themA team is how a school divides up. Being on one is what opens its classes, its children and their marks.
- The change logWho added, changed or removed what, and when — and how to find one particular change.
- Resetting two-step sign-in for someoneWhen a teacher's phone is lost, an administrator clears her authenticator app so she can set one up again.
- Schools, districts and school yearsHow terms hold a year of classes, and what only a district or Mastery Board administrator can do.
