For kindergarten and elementary teaching teams

What each child has mastered, on one board.

Teachers mark letter sounds, word blending and every other skill they teach, child by child. Mastery Board adds it up as they go: who has it, who is getting there, and who needs them tomorrow morning.

Schools join by invitation: request a free trial below, or write to info@abovesoulutions.com. Already have an account? Sign in.

The Assessments grid, with invented children. Each mark is typed straight into the grid and saves itself; the percentage and the level are worked out as the teacher goes, and the row along the foot is the class average.

Built around the way the marking actually happens

On paper at the table with a child, typed in later at a desk, on an iPad, a Chromebook or a phone — whichever is to hand.

  • A class in a couple of minutes

Every child down the side, every question across the top. Type a mark and it saves itself — there is no Save button to forget. Arrow keys move, Enter goes down a row.

  • One child at a time

Sitting beside a child, mark her letter by letter, tapping the ones she missed. Targets big enough to press without looking up from the paper.

  • Who to pull tomorrow

Every mark rolls up into mastered, developing and needs support. What to reteach lists the children and the exact skills, and small groups come out of it.

Recording one child on their own, with an invented child. Start marks a skill all correct, then the teacher taps the letters and words they missed — a sentence a word at a time — and the score beside the skill and the percentage at the foot follow along.

The top of What to reteach, with invented children: every letter, word and sentence somebody missed, hardest first, and who missed each one. A sentence marked a word at a time underlines only the words that were actually missed, and the rest of the list carries on further down the page, skill by skill.

Teams share the work. A grade team builds one Board Template — the units, the questions, the letters on the page — and every class on the team marks against the same thing. Conference sheets, class records and blank recording sheets print from it.

How templates work

The groups make themselves

Choose the skill and how many groups you want, and Mastery Board splits the class by how the children actually did on it — closest scores together, the group who need you most first.

Then move anyone you like. A teacher knows things a percentage does not: who works with whom, who was away the week it was taught, who needs to sit near her. The groups print, one to a page or all on one.

The Small groups tab of a class’s Mastery Board, with invented children. Each unit keeps its own groups; here Unit 3’s are split by the class’s scores on one objective — children with similar scores together, the lowest-scoring group first — and the teacher moves anyone she likes afterwards with the dots beside their name.

Excel, both ways

Most teams kept these records in a spreadsheet before, and some days a spreadsheet is still what is to hand. So a board goes out to Excel whole, and marks typed there come back.

  • Export Board

One workbook for the whole board: a Summary tab, a Reports tab, and a tab for every unit. The colours are the app's own and the score, the percent and the level on every row are formulas, so a mark changed in Excel moves everything that reads it. Only the cells a teacher types in are open; the rest is locked, so a formula can never be typed over by accident.

    Taking a board to Excel
  • Import Scores

Marks typed in that file come back to the board they came from, and only that board: the file is checked to be this teacher's, this class's and this board's first. Units with marks in the file are listed, the ones the board has nothing on yet already ticked, and a unit that already has marks warns before the file writes over them. A blank cell never clears a mark.

Import Scores, choosing which units to bring back. The file has been checked to be this board’s. Units the board has nothing on yet are ticked already; a unit that already has marks on the board starts unticked, and ticking it warns that the file’s marks will replace the board’s where they differ.

Mastery Board is for school staff. Children never sign in.

There is no student login, and no way for a child to make an account: every account comes from an administrator’s invitation to a member of staff. Children are recorded in it by their teachers, as part of teaching them — they never use it, and it asks nothing of them.

There is no advertising, nothing that tracks anyone across the web, and nothing in a child’s record is used to train anything or sold to anyone.

One child’s progress page, with an invented child. The three figures are her score across the year and the level it falls in, the units she has been assessed on, and the unit she was away for, which counts toward no average; under them, unit by unit, every item she was asked and the mark she got.

What a principal and a district office will ask

Short answers here; the full ones on the Privacy and Security pages, which are written to be read by the people who have to sign off on them.

Who owns the records?
The school. Mastery Board holds education records on the school's behalf and uses them only to run the service for that school, on the terms FERPA sets for an outside school official. Designating us one is the district's decision.
Who can see a child's marks?
The teachers on that class's team, the school's administrators, and the district's — and Mastery Board's own administrators, to set things up and help. The database checks every request against who may see what — there is no master key in the app.
How do people sign in?
By invitation only, with a password or the district's Microsoft work or school account, and then a 6-digit code from an authenticator app. The database refuses to make an account for an address nobody invited.
Is there a record of changes?
Every change to marks, notes, children, classes and access is recorded with who made it and when. School and district administrators can read their own.
How do we get our data deleted?
A school or district administrator writes to us, and any or all of it is permanently deleted within 7 days. When an agreement ends, everything goes within 30 days.
Is it accessible?
It meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard the ADA's Title II rule sets for schools, by our own evaluation. The Accessibility page lists every criterion and how it is met.

How a school starts

  1. We set up your school

Request a free trial below, or tell us the district and its schools. We add them, and invite your first administrator.

  2. Your administrator invites the staff

Each invitation names the person, their school and their team. Nobody else can make an account.

  3. Teachers open it where they already work

A ClassLink tile, a link in a Schoology course, or a bookmark. Ask your technology department to allow masteryboard.com.

Tell us about your school, and we’ll set Mastery Board up for you to try with your team. We’ll write back to the address you give us.

Rather write? Email info@abovesoulutions.com. It helps to say which district you are in, how many schools and teachers it would be, what you use to keep these records today, and what you would want it to do in the first term.

We'll set up your trial for this address.

Leave it blank for an independent school.
