What the colours mean

• Mastered — 80% and above. Green.
• Developing — 50–79%. Amber.
• Needs Support — below 50%. Red.
• Hatched, with no number — not assessed, and left out of every average.

The same three levels are used everywhere: the squares on the Summary tab, the Level column on the grid, the Reports tab and a child's own page. The legend sits above the Summary grid. Press any square there to record that child on that unit; the cursor lands in their row.

In the grid you type into, only a Needs Support mark is filled red. Green and amber are coloured numbers instead, so what to go back to stands out rather than every cell competing.

The percentages behind them

A child's percentage is what they got out of what they were actually marked on. Items left blank are excluded, never counted as zero, so a half-finished unit still reads correctly. A percentage is never rounded up into a level it hasn't reached: 79.6% shows as 79.

A rubric is read by how far below the top each level is, rather than as a share: the top is 100%, and each level down is 20 points less. On a scale of 1 to 4 that is 100, 80, 60 and 40 — so a 3 of 4 is Mastered, where three quarters would have made it Developing.

The class average row

Along the foot of both grids is Class average. On the grid you type into, each column is the average of the children marked on that question or skill, and the figure under % is the class's average overall. Children marked absent are left out of it, and so are any unenrolled children you have chosen to see.

A blank is never a zero anywhere in Mastery Board. Every average is of what was recorded, not of what was left.
